Pheochromocytomas found outside the adrenal gland are often caused by a problem with the SDHB gene. Pheochromocytomas outside the adrenal gland are called paragangliomas and lead to cancer more often than adrenal pheochromocytomas. The problems in the SDHB gene lead to a hereditary type of paragangliomas, so it can pass from generation to generation.
