How big is the scar from parathyroid surgery?

The size of the scar depends on the type of surgery being performed. If you are having what is called a minimally invasive parathyroid surgery, where one well-localized parathyroid is removed, then your scar may be one to two inches. If, however, the surgeon needs to examine the other glands he/she may need to extend that scar to 2-3 inches in order to have a better view. The size also depends on surgeon’s preference and ease of visualization of necessary structures at the time of the procedure.
