During a radioactive iodine uptake test, your doctor will inject a small amount of radioactive iodine into your body. Later, he or she can measure the amount of radioactive iodine in your thyroid. This determines the level of hormones your thyroid is producing and whether or not a goiter is causing your thyroid to become overactive.
