How do hormones affect sexual function?

Bonnie Lynn Wright, PhD
Geriatrics Nursing

Reproductive function is totally dependent on hormones. That's why a woman's period doesn't start until her hormones come on-line during puberty and it ends when her hormones diminish sufficiently to cause menopause.

Sexual function beyond reproduction is somewhat less dependent on hormones. Men and women can be sexually active beyond their reproductive years happily. Some adjustments need to be made such as frequency, timing and lubricant. You may want sex less often. The term "quickie" may disappear from your vocabulary. You may need to use a lubricant as part of foreplay. Bottom line, hormones will impact sexual function but not eliminate it.
