We lose most of our heat through our skin. A smaller individual has a higher surface-to-volume ratio compared to a larger individual, which means smaller individuals will lose heat at a higher rate. The same principle is illustrated by the fact that mittens are warmer than gloves. In gloves, the increased surface area which is required to surround each individual finger will facilitate faster heat loss in comparison to mittens.
