Chemicals found in emotional tears include the protein prolactin, the Adrenocorticotopic hormones and the endorphin leucine-enkephalin.

Prolactin is known to control breast milk production. Adrenocorticotropic hormones indicate high stress levels. And, leucine-enkephalin, which is an endorphin that reduces pain and helps to improve mood.

Reflex tears, by comparison, are generally found to be about 98 percent water.
