Can diffuse goiter be prevented?

Often, goiters are the result of things you cannot control, such as the level of your thyroid function and whether or not you have an auto-immune disorder. In parts of the world where iodine deficiency is common, diffuse goiter can be prevented by increasing iodine intake. However, iodine deficiency is rare in the United States and most of the developed world, and taking too much iodine may itself cause thyroid problems.
