Side effects of the emergency contraceptive ella (ulipristal) include:
  • painful periods
  • spotting between periods
  • nausea
  • tiredness
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • stomach pain
Call your doctor if these symptoms become persistent or severe. In addition, call your doctor right away if you begin to feel severe lower abdominal pain three to five weeks after taking ella. You could have an ectopic pregnancy (one that develops outside the womb), in which case you may need emergency treatment.
