What are the precautions for desmopressin (DDAVP)?

Desmopressin (DDAVP) has several precautions that your doctor should discuss with you. These include:

  • Do not take desmopressin if you know you are allergic to it.
  • Make sure you tell your doctor and pharmacist all prescription drugs and nonprescription substances you are taking, including vitamins, aspirin or any dietary supplements.
  • Desmopressin may interact with other drugs, so tell your doctor if you are taking any tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline or imiprimine (Tofranil), aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, seizure medications like carbamazepine (Tegretol), chlorpromazine (Thorazine, Sonazine), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), clofibrate, demeclocycline (Declomycin),  fludrocortisones, the anticoagulant heparin, the mood stabilizer lamotrigine (Lamictal) or lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid), any narcotic (opiate) pain medications, overactive bladder drugs like oxybutynin (Ditropan) or the selective serotonin antidepressants like fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem) or urea (Pytest).
  • Make sure you tell your doctor if you have kidney or blood sodium problems, or high blood pressure, cystic fibrosis, blood clots or heart disease.
  • Make sure you tell your doctor about your plans to get pregnant, if you are currently pregnant or if you are breastfeeding.
  • Make sure you discuss with your doctor about your alcohol use.
