How does Prempro treat menopausal symptoms?

Prempro relieves menopausal symptoms because the estrogens in Prempro replace those no longer produced by the ovaries. The progesterone component in Prempro protects menopausal women with an intact uterus from the risk of uterine cancer. In addition, because estrogen keeps the bones strong, replacing the estrogen lost during menopause helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Prempro should be used at the lowest dose and for the shortest period of time necessary to relieve menopausal symptoms and prevent osteoporosis.

While taking Prempro, you will not have a monthly menstrual period. You may have intermittent bleeding and spotting, however, although this should stop over time. If you prefer to have a monthly period, Premphase, a hormone replacement therapy which provide progesterone only during the last half of the cycle, may be a better choice for you.
