Does NuvaRing affect sexual intercourse?

During clinical trials for the Nuvaring this question was asked. More specifically partners were asked if they could feel the ring during sexual intercourse and about 7 of every hundred partners said they could feel the ring. Probably more important was the second question; "did the ring bother them?" Only one in one hundred sexual partners said feeling the ring was bothersome.
Do not remove the ring for sexual intercourse, it is just too easy to forget to put it back in. If you wish, you may remove it briefly to rinse with warm water, but immediately replace the ring in the vagina. If the ring is left out for more than three hours, use a back up contraception such as condoms or abstinence until the ring has been back in place for 7 days.

During intercourse, neither you nor your partner should be able to feel NuvaRing if it is properly inserted. Do not remove NuvaRing for sexual intercourse, and do not insert it soley for sexual intercourse. You must wear NuvaRing for three weeks straight and remove it for one week in order for it to be effective. If your NuvaRing falls out during sexual intercourse, or if it is bothersome during sex and you have to remove it, rinse it with lukewarm water and reinsert it deeply into the vagina. Do not allow NuvaRing to be out of the vagina for longer than three hours. If it is out of the vagina for longer than three hours, you may need to use a back-up method of birth control.
