If you are diagnosed early enough, you may be able to significantly slow the progression of emphysema and otherwise continue your lifestyle. Of course, for smokers this will mean giving up cigarettes. No exceptions.

For those who have more severe cases of emphysema, managing the disease will be more difficult. It is important to follow the treatment plan prescribed by your doctor. This might mean taking medication on a daily basis and making more of an effort to live a healthier lifestyle. It may mean avoiding things and places that can make breathing difficult. It may mean going for pulmonary rehabilitation, with teaches exercises to help make breathing easier, and practicing these. It also might mean breathing with an oxygen tank for the rest of your life.
