Studies are currently being conducted to better identify which children are more at risk of developing acute otitis media. Researchers are trying to figure out why some children suffer more from middle ear infections than others. Other studies are looking into the effects of ear infections on speech and language development, as well as ways to help doctors diagnose infection more effectively.

There is also research into the best drugs to use to treat otitis media and then ultimately how to develop a vaccine to prevent it entirely. Ongoing studies are questioning the use of antibiotics and more and more research is being conducted to address that concern.

Alternative treatments such as homeopathic and chiropractic treatments are also being studied. Their effectiveness has not been confirmed.
