How do other illnesses affect ear disorders?

Respiratory illnesses, like the common cold, are often the culprit in middle ear infections. As the illness spreads to the middle ear, fluids can accumulate and cause swelling around the eardrum. Certain diseases may also affect hearing. Viral illnesses, including mumps, may cause hearing loss. In rare cases, a tumor may be implicated in hearing loss or other ear disorders.
