Cholesteatoma can cause hearing loss, as well as some rather serious secondary problems. As cholesteatoma expands, tissue and bone required for hearing are lost, destroyed by the growing cyst. This causes hearing loss and can lead to deafness.

In addition to losing their hearing, people affected by cholesteatoma can suffer from serious diseases such as meningitis.
