How does surgery treat barotrauma?

Extreme cases of ear barotrauma may require a form of surgery called myringotomy. First, the patient is placed under general anesthesia. Next, the doctor makes a small incision in the eardrum from which fluid can be siphoned. A tube is placed in the hole, allowing air to flow easily into the ear. This tube equalizes the pressure between the inside and outside of the ear. The cut eventually heals by itself.
