How do other illnesses affect barotrauma?

Several different illnesses can amplify the effects of ear barotrauma. Any impediment to the flow of air through the eustachian tube into the ear can increase the duration and severity of the condition. Sinus and ear infections, allergies, and colds all can contribute to barotrauma.
