According to one study, complications following ear piercings occur in about 35% of cases, and infections are the most common of those complications. Perichondritis is a type of bacterial infection that can occur following ear cartilage piercing, also known as high piercing. Although still uncommon, the numbers of people developing this infection has increased along with the popularity of this style of piercing.
