How common are ear disorders?

Some ear disorders are more common than others. Otitis media, or middle ear infections, has been diagnosed in five out of six children by age 3. On the other hand, the prevalence of hearing loss goes up as we age. Experts report that hearing loss affects 3.5 percent of all children, and up to one third of adults who are 70 or older.
