If someone you care for gets hit in the ear and blood starts to pool, they may develop a permanently malformed cauliflower ear unless they get prompt medical attention. A doctor will drain the clot and bandage the ear tightly to press the skin and cartilage back together. Without this treatment, the clot can interfere with blood flow to the cartilage, killing it and ruining the shape of the ear. The ear may also become infected. To avoid cauliflower ear, encourage the person to wear a helmet or headgear when playing contact sports, riding a bike, or doing other activities that may cause ear injury.
