A child who gets hit in the ear may develop the same injury as an adult, but you'll usually see cauliflower ear on boxers, wrestlers, and rugby players. This lumpy-looking malformation can form within days of an ear injury, and its physical effects-including the death of the ear cartilage underneath-are not limited to any specific age group. However, some teenage athletes see cauliflower ear as a status symbol, and some injure themselves on purpose to try to get one.
