Although there's no sure way to prevent them, certain lifestyle changes can limit the risk of your child developing a viral ear infection. Children, already more susceptible than adults, can be at even greater risk when placed in contact with other infected children, such as at a group daycare facility. If your child is prone to ear infections try to limit exposure to group childcare and tobacco smoke. Infants who feed from a bottle on their backs also tend to have higher rates of infection, so try to bottle-feed your baby in an upright position. Lastly, breastfeeding has been shown to lower the incidence of viral ear infections, probably because the mother is able to pass along disease-fighting antibodies from her immune system.
