Can a combination of treatments be used for people with acoustic neuromas?

Isaac Yang, MD
Before radiosurgery and radiotherapy, open microneurosurgery was the only way to treat acoustic neuromas. The modalities of radiation and radiotherapy allow doctors to treat a tumor after most of it has been taken out. For instance, if doctors want to try to save facial nerve function and there's a tumor that's very attached to the nerve, a little bit can be left behind and followed up with radiation treatment. However, research has shown that whether doctors remove 100% of the tumor, or most of the tumor followed by either observation or radiation for the residual, the overall rate of recurrence is essentially unchanged in these two groups.
