How does barotrauma relate to hearing damage?

Barotrauma occurs when air pressure inside the ear and outside the ear becomes imbalanced. If severe, it can result in eardrum rupture, which damages the hearing. This is sometimes referred to as airplane ear as it occurs often during flying when air pressure may become imbalanced during takeoff and landing. Barotrauma also may occur to someone during scuba or deep sea diving. In most instances, this hearing damage is temporary as eardrum ruptures typically heal in a matter of weeks or months.
