In addition to pain relievers, a washcloth soaked in warm water placed over the ear may be useful in easing the pain caused by a viral ear infection. Certain over-the-counter medications may be helpful, but others such as antihistamines or decongestants carry no benefit. Children under 16 with an infection should not be given aspirin at all.
