Because perichondritis is a bacterial infection, antibiotics are needed to eliminate the bacteria from your body. When the pus between the cartilage and perichondrium is too great, your doctor may need to drain the fluids to prevent complications. If the infection has spread to the cartilage, causing the tissue to be damaged or destroyed, surgery to remove these portions might also be required. Because the cartilage gives the ear its shape, removal may change the way the ear looks.
