Are there alternative treatments for acute otitis media?

There are two alternative treatments for acute otitis media that have been studied by researchers. Both are practiced because many people believe that antibiotics are used too much, which creates resistant bacteria. Homepathy treatment involves treating the symptoms of the middle ear infection using plants and minerals. The substances are mixed and diluted and given to people with otitis media.

Chiropractic treatments are also being used as an alternative treatment for ear infections. While studies have not proven that this method works, practitioners believe that manipulating the spine opens up the Eustachian tube, which connects the nose and middle ear. This helps the fluid drain from the ear. Both homeopathy and chiropractic treatments have not been studied enough to know whether or not they are safe to use on children.
