Why might my doctor prescribe hydrochlorothiazide?

Your doctor is most likely to prescribe hydrochlorothiazide, or HCTZ (Aquazide H, Diaqua, Hydrocot and others) to treat fluid retention. This can happen in people with conditions such as high blood pressure or kidney and heart problems, and those having steroid or hormone therapy. It may also be prescribed to prevent kidney stones in certain people, to treat electrolyte disturbances in the body, or for a disease known as diabetes insipidus (DI).
