Aldactone (spironolactone) is often prescribed to people with high blood pressure, usually in combination with other drugs. Aldactone is also used to treat fluid retention (edema) caused by congestive heart failure, liver disease or kidney disease. Aldactone also is prescribed to people with hyperaldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone, which can lower potassium levels in the blood and lead to health problems.
