What are the risks of taking spironolactone (Aldactone)?

While taking spironolactone, you should not take potassium supplements, salt substitutes, or other diuretics because these substances may cause potassium levels to become too high which risks a potentially-fatal blood condition. Spironolactone may also interact with a variety of other medications, which may increase the risk for serious side effects. To reduce this risk, it's important to tell your doctor about all medications you're taking before you take spironolactone. Other risks may be possible, so ask your doctor if you have any questions about taking spironolactone.
