All diuretics remove salt and fluid from the body. Loop diuretics act on a part of the kidney called the Loop of Henle. These are among the strongest diuretics and are the most often prescribed for people who have heart failure or kidney disease.

Several loop diuretics are available in the US. These include bumetanide, ethacrynic acid (Edecrin), furosemide (Lasix), and torsemide (Demadex).
