What is chlorthalidone?

Chlorthalidone a prescription anti-hypertension medication. This medication may be used alone or in combination with other drugs for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). Controlled high blood pressure reduces the workload of the heart and lowers the risk of serious cardiovascular complications. Chlorthalidone, a diuretic or "water pill," works by increasing urination so the amount of water retained in the body decreases and blood pressure lowers. Fluid retention and swelling (edema) due to congestive heart disease, kidney disease, severe liver disease, and hormone or steroid treatment may also be reduced by using chlorthalidone. This medication is available in tablet form.
