How does mannitol treat swelling in the eye?

Mannitol is an osmotic diuretic that reduces ocular (eye) edema and swelling by making excess fluid in the eye move out of the eye and into the blood. It is generally administered to help reduce fluid buildup contributing to intraocular pressure in cases when no other treatment will work.
