Precocious puberty is a condition in which signs of puberty (rapid bone growth, the growth of breasts or body hair) are experienced in girls before  seven or eight years of age and in boys before nine years of age. It is caused by an early release of the hormones estrogen or testosterone by the pituitary gland. Spironolactone inhibits the action of testosterone that can cause precocious puberty in boys.
