How soon after taking hydrochlorothiazide will my symptoms improve?

There are several factors your doctor will consider when prescribing hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) to treat edema caused by congestive heart failure, cirrhosis or kidney disorders. Depending on the severity of the edema symptoms and the dosage, the length of time needed for HCTZ to effectively reduce swelling will vary. HCTZ is not a cure for high blood pressure. You may have to take it for a long time to keep your blood pressure at a healthy level.
