Mannitol poses a risk of an allergic reaction. If you experience hives or breathing problems, stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention. This drug also may pose a risk to a developing fetus. Pregnant women should discuss the risks with a doctor before taking mannitol. There is a risk that this drug will exacerbate already existing electrolyte or fluid imbalance. In some pediatric cases, there is a risk that mannitol will increase swelling in the brain. You may not be able to take this medicine if you have certain conditions, including severe dehydration; congestion in the lungs; kidney disease or kidney failure; or bleeding in the brain that is not caused by surgery.
