The liver transplantation surgeon will tell the recipient the organ donor's sex, age, and cause of death at the time of notification. There is always a risk benefit conversation between the recipient and surgeon. The surgeon is available to discuss many factors that could contribute to the recipient's decision whether to accept the organ offer, including the overall health of the recipient, the time outside the body (cold time), the cause of death, and potential past illnesses of the donor.
