What is recovery like for liver transplant surgery?

After liver transplant surgery there is usually a one- or two-day stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Immediately after surgery a breathing tube will be placed to help you breathe, usually for about 24 hours. There will also be many monitoring lines and IVs to help to monitor your recovery. These will be removed as you become more stable.

Once you leave the ICU, you will generally be monitored in the hospital on a medical floor for two to eight more weeks.
