What are common characteristics of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)?

To diagnose eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), gastroenterologists perform an upper endoscopy with biopsy of the esophagus. Below are the most common characteristics of EoE.
  • Linear furrows
  • Ringed esophagus: EoE may reveal itself through concentric rings lining the esophagus.
  • Linear furrow plus rings: In some instances, EoE can manifest itself as both linear furrows and rings.
Although these characteristics suggest an EoE diagnosis, the presence of linear furrows and rings does not necessarily mean the condition is present. In some adult patients with EoE, the esophagus can appear normal.
