What are common allergic conditions of the GI tract in children?

Laura J. Wozniak, MD
Pediatrics
Two of the more common allergic and immune-mediated digestive diseases that affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are:
  • celiac disease (CD)
  • eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)
These disorders often develop in early childhood and require a lifetime of vigilant management. They have been on the rise over the past decade although the underlying reason remains poorly understood. Symptoms can be nonspecific. A lack of targeted testing and blood markers (clinical biomarkers) cause the disorders to often go unrecognized or misdiagnosed.
