What are hiccups?

Hiccups are uncontrolled movements of the diaphragm, which is a muscle that helps with breathing. These movements cause the vocal cords to close suddenly, which makes the characteristic "hiccup" sound. Hiccups can occur after eating or drinking alcohol, or more rarely can be due to a medical condition, such as an infection, stomach problems, medications, or electrolyte abnormalities.
