Is water necessary for a healthy gastrointestinal system?

Fluids are necessary for a healthy gastrointestinal (GI) system. Fluids dissolve nutrients and bulk up stool making bowel movements easier. Whereas water hydrates the body, fluids that contain caffeine or alcohol dehydrate the body. Alcohol may also cause inflammation of the esophagus or stomach. It is therefore important to consume water or juices rather than caffeinated or alcoholic beverages for hydration and GI health. But fruit juices should be enjoyed in moderation, as they are high in calories.
