Anal fissures can be prevented by practicing good anal hygiene including keeping the anal area dry and wiping with a soft cotton or moistened cloth. It is also helpful to avoid constipation by consuming a diet high in fiber and drinking plenty of fluids. Additional preventative measures include avoiding straining during defecation and avoiding trauma to the anus.
