The colon does not thin as we age. However, because of poor diet and less fiber in the American diet, we do see more forced out-pouching of the colon in the older population. This out-pouching is caused by chronic constipation, which puts pressure on the walls of the colon. This can be prevented by increasing fiber in your diet and adequate fluid intake.
