Because the causes of gastrointestinal tract birth defects aren't entirely understood, the risk factors aren't completely known either. Genetic factors may increase the risk, as may environmental factors. Certain medications can cause birth defects, so tell your doctor all medicines you take - including supplements and over-the-counter medications - if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
