The cause of gastrointestinal tract birth defects isn't always known. Genetics seem to play a role, as do environmental factors. It is thought that in some cases these factors must come together in order to produce a birth defect. For example, someone might be genetically predisposed to a gastrointestinal tract birth defect, but unless an environmental factor also triggers it, they will not actually develop the abnormality. In approximately half of all cases the cause is not determinable.
