What are the treatment options for viral gastrointestinal infections?

Because of their nature, viral gastrointestinal infections cannot be treated with medication. The key to successfully treating most cases of viral gastroenteritis is self-care. Severe cases that lead to dehydration may need treatment at a hospital in order to properly rehydrate the system, and cases that go on for more than 48 hours may be treated with a medication to slow or stop the diarrhea.
