A diffuse axonal injury is a type of traumatic brain injury also known as shearing. A traumatic brain injury results from some type of violent trauma to the head. When the brain suffers a diffuse axonal injury, there is widespread damage to the nerves, also known as axons, in the brain. The damage to the nerves in the brain can lead to disruptions in the communication between nerves in the brain.
