What causes a diffuse brain injury?

Diffuse brain injury is a type of traumatic brain injury that can be caused by diffuse axonal injury, ischemic brain injury, brain swelling, and diffuse vascular injury. The types of accidents that usually cause diffuse brain injuries are ones in which forces of acceleration or deceleration affect your brain. Examples include falls or car accidents. These forces affect your brain by causing it to slide into your skull. When this occurs, nerve fibers can tear and bleeding in or near your brain can occur.
