How does a diffuse brain injury affect the body?

A diffuse brain injury can affect your body in many ways. In many cases, a loss of consciousness will take place, and coma or even death may occur. The initial injury may cause your brain to bleed and to swell, which can cause a buildup of pressure. This pressure buildup can result in even more damage to your brain. If axons, or large nerve fibers, are torn - which occurs in diffuse axonal injuries - a biochemical cascade of toxins in the brain can be triggered in the days after the injury.
